Financial Follies: Money Scams

Let’s talk Financial Follies
Have you had any?  I have.
Back in our first few years of marriage my wife and I decided to buy a piece of property outside of town to move our trailer house to.
Yeah, we had no business doing so, but it seemed to be the thing to do. We ended up not making the payments and had to let the land go back. Lesson learned. Of course, it’s not our only Financial Folly, but luckily it wasn’t a money scam.
Money Scams. I hate them. I haven’t been caught in a big one, but some folks have.

I’ve recently started working with Corrine, who does have experience with money scams. Here’s her story, as she told me.

Corinne’s Money Woes

“I was getting desperate about changing my financial situation so I pulled up some things online. I signed up for something that was about $97 and thought that was pretty good deal.

When I logged in, it gave me a phone number to call to get started, which I did. The man I talked to was good. He gave me this long spiel about using other people’s money to make your own.

This was because of putting it on credit cards. He talked about good credit vs bad credit and this was good credit because I would be able to make it all back and it was also tax deductible. He went on and on and had me believing it.

It seemed pretty awesome. This led to other companies calling me that were tied in with them to help me maximize my business. This cost another small fortune.

This was for my tax advisors who also recommended that I need to have at least 3 business credit cards to build up my business score. I did that and it brought further into debt. Then, of course, there was the web building site which added a lot more money.

After that, it was a huge drop shipping company. After all was said and done, I had maxed out 4 credit cards and had 3 loans. I felt like this was my only way out, but then all at once, I was in financial ruin.

I couldn’t pay my bills and I was in debt up to my eyeballs. All over one site that I thought was under $100. I ended up disputing all of the charges with my credit cards, and all but one worked with me.

It took a while, but I got those charges reversed, along with 2 of the loans. The one credit card that wouldn’t work with me, I owe about $5000, but I refused to pay it. The one loan that won’t work with me is for about $1000 and I refused to pay that too. That killed my credit score.

I used to have excellent credit, but in that short amount of time, it crashed.”

It’s a shame that there are jerks out there that want to get money the shady way, instead of working for it.

Anyway, the scams abound, so here are some resources to check out to help you hang on to your hard earned cash.

Now, that’s not everything. There’s a ton out there as there’s a WHOLE BUNCH of scams in the works. This will help you get an idea of what’s happening and how to avoid losing money the way that Corrine did.

If you have any other great resources, let me know!
