Tax return season brings on all sorts of different feelings depending on your current financial situation. Those who are expecting tax refunds are probably jumping for joy, while those who expect to owe are probably dreading this time of year. No matter what your tax return will bring, we all have one thing in common: we need to file our taxes. For those with simple tax returns, I wanted to share with you 11 places to file your tax return for free that are recommended by the IRS.

File a free federal tax return if you are:

  • a US citizen with an adjusted gross income of $69,000 or less and under the age of 52; or
  • an active military member with an adjusted gross income of $69,000 or less; or
  • eligible for the Earned Income Credit

If you qualify to file a free federal tax return you qualify for to file a free state tax return, as well.

H&R Block

File a free federal tax return if you are:

  • a US citizen with an adjusted gross income of $69,000 or less and between the ages of 17 and 51; or
  • an active military member with an adjusted gross income of $69,000 or less; or
  • eligible for the Earned Income Credit

If you qualify to file a free federal tax return you qualify for to file a free state tax return, as well.

IRS Free Fillable Forms

Regardless of your adjusted gross income, you can use the Free File Fillable Forms to file your federal tax return for free. The downside to this is that there is essentially no guidance to help you, so you must have an idea of what you are doing with your taxes first, as you will not have anything walking you through.
